Stitched Together

Since my blog has a brand new look, I thought I'd tell you a bit about the new banner design. About a month ago, I was lucky enough to find this amazing handmade quilt at the thrift store. I call it the "Holy &*#$@! Quilt" because I feel so fortunate to have found it. Most of what I purchase at thrift stores doesn't break the $10 mark, but this was priced at $89-- however I think we can all agree that it's worth that many times over. How could I resist?! It's an entirely hand-stitched double-sized quilt and has no loose threads or stains whatsoever. I adore the beautiful mix of colorful feedsacks with plain white and green fabrics, and the flower garden pattern is a classic. I feel so grateful to have been able to rescue a handmade beauty like this and make it a part of my home.

HolyQuilt

While we're on the subject of quilts, do you guys remember the adorable pair of 1970s-era twin sized quilts I thrifted last year, which (as the "Made Especially for You" label informed us) were sewn by a woman named Edna DeMerse? I got some fun e-mails and comments from you guys wondering if she was still alive, where she was from, who the quilts were made for, and so on. Well, the mystery has finally been solved! Edna's step-niece Gladys came across my blog entry and left this sweet comment on the original post:

Hi I was a step-neice of Edna DeMerse of Vallejo Ca. I was just surfing on the internet and here I am. She was a wonderful lady who passed away in 1995. She loved to make things and taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl.

How great is that?! Thanks so much for writing, Gladys. This is just part of what I love about buying things (especially handmade things) secondhand-- behind every item is a story. I feel so lucky that in this particular case, I was able to find out just what that story was.

Thrifty Tuesday...on Thursday!

Glasbake_2

My mind is reeling from the good fortune I just had at the thrift store! I found a ricidulous amount of vintage kitchenware (Pyrex, Glasbake, Melamine), which y'all know I love (and more importantly, actually use) today, which makes me even happier I recently spent a weekend cleaning out my kitchen cabinets. Out with the cheese plates and wine glasses we will never, ever use (I'm more of a highball-in-a-Snidley Whiplash-glass kind of gal), in with the cute, colorful, and functional awesomeness of Butterprint Turquoise mixing bowls and speckled coral melamine.

Amish_2

I honestly find that having kitchenware like this around makes cooking a lot more enjoyable. If you love this kinda stuff too, you should check out Pyrex Love, a great site run by my friends Linda and Bryan (who I ran into at a flea market not too long ago...gee, I wonder what they were looking to buy?). It's a really indispensable site, not to mention it's total eye candy! I love obsessive websites like theirs, and I find that Pyrex is a relatively harmless addiction considering that I rarely buy a piece over $5 and, y'know, it's actually functional. (Thanks in advance for enabling me, y'all.)

Floralz

The fabric all that kitchenware is sitting on is a vintage sheet I found a while back when thrifting with Alison and Faythe. I don't think I'll ever tire of these sweet and colorful florals, there's just something so fresh and fun about them that makes them timeless. I actually just received a package from my parents last week, who picked up a bunch of great vintage fabric for me at an antique fair near them in Upstate New York. My favorite find is pictured above, the daisy-and-tulip floral on brown canvas. I think it's going to end up as a new totebag for Fall, maybe with some butter yellow cotton inside? Anyhow, I just love it, thanks Mom and Pop!

Uc

In other news, our Uncommon Threads episode aired yesterday (that's Teresa, Wendy, and yours truly pictured above). It was great to see those super-cute projects again, this time on the tube! Wendy and Teresa did a great job, and it was fun to see Alison make that crocheted circle rug again...I'd love to try it using terrycloth strips, it would make a great bath mat! Since my project was cut for time, I'm thinking I'll work up a how-to for this blog instead. No point in letting all that prep work go to waste! Now to just fine some time to craft...siiigh...

Thrifty Tuesday...on Thursday!

Towelstitch
This week has been a jam-packed and super stressful one—so much so that I was never able to make it to the thrift stores on Tuesday! It's been eating away at me ever since, but I've been juggling way too many plates to spare the time. As I ran errands today, though, I decided to just say screw it and go. I needed some mindless wandering time all to myself. It helped a lot! Plus, if I'd never gone, I wouldn't have found these delightful goodies.

The pic above shows the vintage daisy bath towel I scored (it's the terrycloth version of my favorite sheets!) and a cross-stitched butterfly for my woodland themed sewing room. The inscription on the back states that it was a gift from Martha to Ollie and Bob. Well, their loss is my gain!
Amishpyrex
Once again, the Pyrex Fairy has smiled down upon me. I have no idea how I've been getting so lucky finding these lovelies lately, but I expect my luck to dry up any day now. And wouldn't you know it, there was a half-price sale happening, so this was only $2! The Pyrex is sitting on a pair of vintage pillowcases I also brought home. These will actually be used on our bed, instead of turned into handbags.
Platter
A lovely (and large!) platter in retro oranges, browns, and greens. Perfect for entertaining (if by entertaining, you mean piling it up with Rice Krispie treats while my friends and I watch horribly great movies like Troll 2).
Frankoma
The last two items were impulse buys—two pieces of Frankoma pottery, which were (for some reason) sold as a set. They had the horn-shaped piece on the right nestled inside the shamrock candy dish on the left...huh? To be honest, I didn't even know what Frankoma pottery was until I got home and looked it up. I just plain liked it, and it was also half-off. Goody for me! Grand total for the day? Under $25! Not too bad, eh?

Speaking of retro awesomeness, did y'all see who we booked to emcee Felt Club this July? Yep, none other than Charles Phoenix! I'm so happy I could plotz.

More later, dudes...it's time for me to down some vitamins and juice to help fight off the summertime cold I seem to be on the brink of succumbing to. Wish me luck!

Curtains
Hoo-boy, it was another lucky thrift day today! I spent the morning in the Valley with my pal Jek, hitting some of her favorite childhood haunts. We both got very lucky—I'm sure she'll post her own finds at some point, so I won't spoil it and tell you what she snagged, but take a gander at my new goodies! Jek spotted these amazing yellow floral curtains first, and knew I just had to have them. That's good thrifting karma, people! Jek is a very fun gal to thrift with, as you might imagine from looking at her blog or Flickr. Anyhoo—I may use these for crafting, or I might just use them as actual curtains. Either way, I'm glad they came home with me!

Fabric

Soon afterwards, I scored two large pieces of amazing un-used vintage fabric. There are about three yards of the red bumblebee-daisy-ladybug-apple fabric, I'm going to split that with Jek and we're going to make her a cute summer skirt out of it. My absolute favorite, though, is the daisy-speckled green cotton...we're talking four yards ovah heah! I'm making myself a skirt and then some, believe you me. That print has me craving barbecues and lemonade like crazy. It's just so retro-summertime sweet.

And hel-LO, what's this? Yep, another piece of fabulous Pyrex in perfect condition. Siiigh, Pyrex, come to me, my love! My new find is sitting on a bright orange gingham table runner Jek passed on—which will probably be making an appearance on my table at a craft fair sometime in the future. Oh and I got an unworn, leaf-green thin jersey teeshirt too (not pictured). Best part? All this stuff cost me $19.74. Hooray!
Runpyrex
Back to work for me...check out the Felt Club website tomorrow to see our full vendor gallery for the XL Summer show  (which I'm feverishly updating as we speak). Also, if you want to see me making a fool of myself on KNBC's morning show "Your LA" last December (when they filmed a segment at our XL Holiday event), check out the Felt Club blog. Thanks to my pals Goli and Natalie at CRAFT magazine, I was finally able to get the segment up on YouTube. Thanks again, ladies!

Thrifty Tuesday

Caftan
I just got back from the Maker Faire last night, and am still catching up on things (sleep, work, laundry), but I couldn't let that get in the way of this morning's thrifting! I'm glad I went, 'cause I ended up with some fun new stuff. Ahhh, stuff!

Above you'll see the eye-searingly bright '60s cotton caftan I scored for $3.99. It's floor-length with huge bell sleeves, is in excellent condition, and fills me with summertime glee. I plan on chopping it off at the waist and making a skirt out of the bottom half (thanks to the newfound skirt-making skills I've picked up via my friend Susan's amazing skirt kits!). I'll use the top half for making zippered pouches and other fun accessories...ooh, maybe some retro headbands?

Plantpot
Next I found this sweet pot, in my favorite vintage chartreuse. I think I'll put a few nice succulents in it and keep it on my nightstand. Hopefully succulents won't look delicious to my cats...I usually can't keep plants around thanks to those furry bastards. We'll see how it goes! The pot was $5, a bit pricey for the thrift store, but I love the color, shape and size, so I nabbed it anyway.

Daisyfab
My last find? Four yards of this sweet, sweet daisy-spotted fabric. It's in fantastic shape, and I'm planning to make myself a skirt out of this as well. Only $1.50!

I'll write more soon about my weekend o' fun, I promise. Until then, you can check out some of the snapshots I took here. It was an amazing time full of amazing friends, I can hardly believe it's over.

Thrifty Tuesday

Thriftpyrex

I've started gong to the thrift store every Tuesday (schedule permitting, of course). Even when I don't buy anything, I love being surrounded by used furniture, old books, and secondhand clothes. There's so much potential in a thrift store. Clothing to alter, furniture to restore, books to read (or cut up for art projects). It's just too fun! Here are today's finds: two Pyrex casseroles and a vintage handmade duvet cover (it's the fabric the casseroles are sitting on). I plan to incorporate the fabric into some of my crafts. There are even some sweet yellow buttons running along one side (not pictured), which I'll be able to use too. Only $12 for everything! Hooray!

Flea Market Finds

Suzy

Just a few of my favorite finds from yesterday's visit to the Pasadena City College flea market. I just love the Suzy Homemaker oven. It came in the box, with full instructions, and doesn't appear to have ever been used. Perfect condition! Then there's the candy-striped ceramic tiger (I love how he has a "knitted" texture) and sweet enamelled metal daisy brooch. Under $3 for both! More pix on my Flickr.

Tigger

Edit: Oops, forgot about this cute melamine kid's tray I found for only $1. I'll probably use it to organize jewelry and such on top of my dresser. I love the sweet illustrations!

Thrifty Tuesday

WOW did I hit the motherlode at the thrift store today! I'd been craving another visit ever since Susan and I went a couple of weeks ago...and thankfully, the weather was a lot less windy and crazy today. (I swear I was shaking sand out of my belongings for days after that freak storm.) Anyway, I'm really glad I went...just check out my finds!

471794899_e45ac9d696

Six different sets of gorgeous vintage sheets and pillowcases in various super-sweet colors...I'm amassing quite a stash of these things, which is great since I keep depleting my supply by making bags and such.

My arms were full and I was about to call it a day when I saw a rack with some pretty orange and yellow flowers calling out to me. I headed over to what I thought might be another set of sheets to add to my haul, only to find I wasn't looking at sheets at all...I was looking at the underside of a handmade quilt!

471794911_419c58bf95

Not only that...there were TWO of these twin-size quilts, made by the same person, using a lot of the same fabrics. They're hand-stitched and colorful as all get-out. Very fun and '70s. I couldn't believe my luck, especially since they were only $9 each. Yowzers!

471794903_2deeaaa863

One of the quilts bore this sweet "Made by" label. Who are you, Edna De Merse? Who did you make these quilts for? A couple of daughters or maybe your grandkids? I guess I'll never know.

471794933_85815f7ec2

I'm just happy I could save these beauties from the thrift store and give them a new home. They still have a ton of life left in them. I'm thinking I'll use one on the end of our bed, and maybe the other will find a home on or near the couch. I need something to keep me cozy while I'm needle-felting little animals and watching America's Next Top Model, after all.

Aw, sheet!

Vincents
...The vintage sheet love continues! I scored these lovely pillowcases and sheets last Thursday, while thrifting with my friend Susan. Expect to see them showing up on bags and fabric bracelets soon! Speaking of which, I'm planning a small website update on Wednesday, April 18. I'll be adding these fun bags:

Bags

as well as some Snappy Fabric Bracelets:

Snapz

...along with a few other swell surprises. I'll be sure to make a post once they're up. (You can also join my mailing list via my homepage.)

Welp, I've got cupcakes to bake and presents to wrap (plus a really wonderful art opening to attend) today, so off I go...have a great weekend!

Back in Action

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've just returned from a weeklong trip visiting my parents in snowy upstate New York. It was absolutely great spending time with them, it's just too bad the weather was so bleh. Hours upon hours of airport delays...yuck. But still, a good time was had by all. Next time they're coming to Los Angeles, though! Man, I missed the sunshine.

The town my parents live in is actually a village—only 1,400 people live there. There is no movie theater (the next town over has one), grades six through twelve are all in one school (that was terrifying as a little kid!) and I'm pretty sure there's only one stoplight. I was a restless teen and didn't much care for smalltown life, but now that I'm thirtysomething I do fantasize about enjoying a Stars Hollow-like existence...especially when our upstairs neighbors (we're in a fourplex) are dropping bowling balls and hosting Beatles sing-a-long nights. But, the fact is I'm not ready to give up the many conveniences big city life has to offer! Country air is great and all, but I'd just miss ordering out for Indian food too dang much.

But holy heck do I miss the thrifting opportunities to be had in my old homestead! Thrift shopping isn't much fun for me these days since the stores here are largely picked-over and/or overpriced (though we do have the awesomest ever flea markets known to man). I'm lucky that my Dad is just as into thrifting and such as I am (he sells on eBay, restores antique furniture, and collects various kooky items), and we spent some time looking around for some of my favorite goodies, such as vintage Pyrex and colorful floral bedsheets. I totally scored on both fronts!

Pyrex_1

The pic above shows what I scored my first day there. The leftmost two dishes are Pyrex, I especially adore the train-themed bowl, I've never seen that design before! The small blue bowl at right is by Fire King, and I don't know who made the yellow daisy bowl but it's so dang cute I couldn't resist. Best of all, the grand total for the dishes was less than $4! So great. The vintage bedsheet these are displayed on was another fun find, I nabbed a flat and fitted sheet set for only $3. I'll be using these as totebag linings and such in the future. So sweet.

We also drove about an hour and a half away to visit the Regional Market in Syracuse. The snow had turned to rain at that point, but we trudged ahead and I found a really fantastic booth run by the folks from The Spice Rack (No website, but their store is at 6195 Route 31, Cicero, NY 13039, ph: 315-699-8206). They were selling all kinds of bulk herbs and spices, dip/dressing mixes, and had an entire section devoted to cupcake sprinkles—you could buy multicolored mixes, or choose individual colors. Swoon! Here's a pic of the sprinkles and sugars I picked up (oh and some heavenly lavender buds too). I also picked up some plump, sticky vanilla beans and a few vegetable dip mixes, which Johnny and I have already been enjoying. Definitely check these folks out if you're in the area. Oh and my mom was nice enough to buy me an Ateco cake decorating kit, so a day or two later I thanked her by using it to make vanilla cupcakes with chocolate-mint frosting.

Sprinkles_1

Speaking of cupcakes (and when am I not?), I'm feeling very inspired by the Cupcake Round-Up recently announced by the food blogs Cupcake Bakeshop and Vanilla Garlic. I have a couple of ideas swirling about, I definitely want to do filled cupcakes of some kind and shopped for ingredients yesterday. I have a pound of guava paste which may end up in some kind of cream filling for an almond or coconut-flavored cupcake, and I'm also thinking of doing a deep, dark chocolate cupcake with a bourbon cream filling and chocolate ganache glaze on top. Not sure yet if I'm actually up to the challenge, but stay tuned to find out if I pull it off!
